Get Ready to Celebrate a Musical Christmas
As festive days are nearing you have got all the reasons to indulge in shopping. Like many others, chances are high that your things-to-buy list is quite big and fat. You would definitely want to decorate your home and, at the same time, you would be buying gifts for near and dear ones.
But how can you celebrate Christmas without aguinaldos, carols and popular Christmas songs? Music is the perfect ingredient to get into holiday mood. Just look around – shopping malls, hotels, clubs, community stores, television channels, radio stations and even your neighbors have started playing Christmas songs.
Without music your holidays remain incomplete – something like foods without salt! Lyrics, tune and rhythm create the right ambience for celebration. A lot of music albums and music videos have released and some are going to hit the stores soon. The whole wide world is going musical to catch the holiday spirit!
Go musical – Go with the rhythm
You have two options: you may choose to be traditional and buy popular music albums of 70′s, 80′s or any other period that evokes your emotions. Or, you may try the latest releases of your favorite music artists.
There is a third option too: take both traditional and trendy numbers and build up a great collection of music albums this winter. Some of the music albums are for your own; you would play them to fill your home with music before during and after Christmas. And some of the albums could be presented to others. You were to buy Christmas gifts for near and dear ones – why don’t you present them with hot music albums of the time?
If you are not sure which are the hit numbers of the day, just go online and look for music charts. These charts would help you find top 10 or top 20 music albums, artists and songs of present time. Then you can easily decide which one is suitable for yourself and which albums could be taken for your friends, family members, relatives or someone special!
Music magazines and music news websites also publish music charts and update the lists regularly. On music magazine websites, you can read reviews, watch trailers of music videos, listen to demo tracks and finally decide whether you would like to buy the album for yourself or someone else.
Christmas music albums have started to populate music stores. Hence, this is the right time to start watching the music charts so that you can grab latest albums soon after the release. Subscribe to music magazines to stay updated all the time.

Latin Music Videos ? How to Track the Trends
Latin music has a huge number of audiences all over the world. Since, music has the power to cross the barriers of language and culture, Latin music is adored and appreciated in all the countries of the world. Latin music is known for its melody and rhythm – salsa, rock in Spanish, Latin music videos and dance numbers are frequently played in parties and clubs.
Music videos, video albums and popular songs of movies are compiled to form video albums. Popular artists, composers, musicians and instrumentalists work hard to make their albums hit.
However, some compositions hit the market and leaves silently, whereas, some make a buzz. On the other hand, some of the songs become all time hit – generations after generations listen to those all time favorites. Artists, composers, lyricists who contribute in making those unforgettable songs become legend.
A number of Latin music videos are released every year. It is quite difficult to keep track of all new releases. One easy way to know about latest music albums and videos is: watching music channels regularly. Most music channels keep their viewers updated on recent releases – trailers and reviews are telecast before the release.
However, it might not be possible for you to stick to music channels 24×7. Then what is the other way to stay updated? How can you ensure that not a single release is overlooked? You can subscribe to a music magazine that reports on latest releases, artists, musicians and keep their readers informed on various happenings in the music industry.
Popular music magazines often set up online edition for their readers. Online music magazine is also a great source of information about Latin and Spanish music. There are general music websites and niche websites. General sites cover information and news about all types of music; whereas, niche websites like Spanish music magazine or Latin music websites keep track of Spanish and Latin music only.
However, a lot of people think twice before buying a new album as it is difficult to predict how good it is in advance. Even when it is of a popular music artist, people lurk when it comes to buy a new album.
That is why music charts are made for. Music news websites maintain a list of popular albums and update the list daily or weekly. This is a good way to judge the potential of new music videos. One that remains in top 10 for long must be a good one. Hence, apart from watching music channels on television, keep a close eye on daily or weekly music charts to find out hit Latin music videos – go with the trends.

The Real World of Digital Music Production
The “diarrhea” of “an awful lot of” contemporary “pop, rap & rock” music (but not all!)
Do you know what happens when you live on a diet of processed entrees and fast food? When never a fresh fruit or vegetable passes your lips and your fiber count is measured in “mgs” instead of grams? You guessed it: that horrible “D” word. Also known in medical circles as IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) –
So what’s up with the computer spew of 75% of many contemporary popular artists? They, say the song is dead; well who killed it? Was it the independent label music movement? Certainly NOT! Was it rap, punk, or grunge or whatever? I’d say, could be. Was it Madonna who first put the crack in “The Wall” of song composing and instrument playing that earlier generations so carefully began brick by brick? I don’t know — for you, but for me, it’s been a downhill ride since 1984.
I was one, well, that was at “the roots of rock” sort of speak (thanks to an older sister who took me to the Fillmore East in New York City at age 14) – I was naïve enough to ask about that “funny smelling smoke” and those funny looking cigarettes; I later thanked her, for I saw “Santana” live there when their second album (Black Magic Woman) hadn’t even hit the shelves.
I saw PINK FLOYD at that venue a year later when they were still called: The Pink Floyd and they had an opening act play before they came out (i.e. later when fame hit: Pink Floyd ALWAYS played alone because of their massive WALL of speakers and equipment.)
I saw bands in New York City that are now relics: Procol Harum, Jethro Tull’s first incarnation, YES, Bob Dylan WITH “The Band”!! – even Black Sabbath after their 1st LP; and, “Mott the Hoople” touring their FIRST LP. (Remember them? –an LP is an old vinyl record that was played on a turntable. YOU didn’t “use the turntable to scratch! – And they made crackling and popping sounds. LONG LIVE THE CD! And the mp3 too) But, I digress…
So where is this blog heading?
Today you can record and cut a CD in your bedroom. Then, (IF you have enough friends and a gig someplace – or JUST USE U-Tube) you can SELL CDs to YOUR FANS, if you can GET ENOUGH, you’ll even make money; MAYBE! It can all be done on your HOME Computer. And why, because YOU are a musician? “Frankly NOT my dear” as Gable used to say. (Gable who? say the younger readers?) It’s all virtual marketing after that…
In case you’re still naïve as to how IT is done – that so many of today’s artists may not need to know almost anything about music, let alone, spend years playing an instrument or singing – and yet get on the “Virtual Airwaves” and even end up on the Today show spot, along with the “singing babies” that periodically appear on the internet sites and on “You-Tube”. Well it doesn’t even take “RC’s” [read Record Companies] Perhaps just a shrewd “Boomer or GenX” Mom/Dad Manager)… Yep, it’s “Performance Now” and there’s very little music to worry those Artists about. The RC’s can still get their cut and have absolutely NO REASON to complain!!! – About the “Indie and Virtual Music artists” wrecking their profit.
THEY helped “build the beast” they fear everyday (and I hope it does eat their Creator like a type of “Cannibal Baby” gone wild).
And “they” profit everyday by the existence of a youth-culture fueled “Music” industry who’s “Heart & Soul” is made up of the “clinking, clacking, metallic empty banging” of a musical palette of sounds that is “as Soul-LESS” as the heart of the “King Beast” himself (you know that Devil “Sam” who is lurking behind everybody’s dream of a “musical-career “Garden of Eden”) –
As for those “Singing Babies” and “Parading Sex-Toy Imagery of “Twelve-year+ something” girly-woman – parading across the video screens of Virtual and TV America (every so often) THEY, and those nice Boomer+ parents, are just hoping a couple will spell “C.A.S.H.” BIG TIME! – This is of course, once their product “Goes Viral…”
And so many of u“You-tubers,” (particularly) the older viewers will be “fooled-again” – having, (in anemic mental-lapses) forgotten the “Anthem of YOUR Youth: “We Won’t Be Fooled Again” (Who?); and, all those “smashing guitars” instead of “Smashing ‘those damn’ Pumpkins” (now Geriatric!)…
All BECAUSE “U” don’t have the “dog-damn” SOFTWARE that I just have to throw in the garbage! (I made a resolve NOT to swear lately, I don’t want to break my will just yet) – nothing against “dog’s really! – Though I am sort-of “one of those cat-guys”…Please don’t message my email, I LOVE animals with four-legs and some with two. (It’s spiders and insects with multiple legs that have been giving me the creeps lately, but then I live in a “real FOREST”…
It came in MARCH: The last “music equipment purchase I knew I was going to be able to make for quite sometime unless, – MY CD goes “Viral” – (highly unlikely as I don’t own a Video camera or even a digital camera) It will be tough to get on YOU-Tube or even MySpace Music with my “old-fashioned music-making way” (and so MUCH profitless Work – not to mention that! – Unpaid labor, hardly worth it) – but that’s aside the point:
In March (as I said), I bought a 0 desktop “plastic” 2-octave Midi Controller” keyboard with my last savings, (2 octaves means that it only has 25 black & white piano-looking keys) and along with that came (from this decptive “kraut” company) the: “Virtual Music Starter Desktop Composing Package” (a VMSDCP (!)) complete with 50 of the “Latest” Digital Virtual Sounds and Samples (your DVSS’s!) that I thought my music was lacking(?!) – Or perhaps, I had a series of “faithless” self-doubts and collapse of my initial musical resolve formed so long ago in those many long hours and days behind “My Old Black & White”…But again, I digress:
So although the keyboard will be minimally useful at my computer desktop for editing and notation work, those wonderfully and cleverly named (and they really are!) modern sound samples have yet to be able to even be tested out with this “rat-like” maze of a software package! “They” (the Kraut Company) sent me for my 0 apparently a bunch of “demo-software” that ‘They” never even paid for – unfortunately you can’t do much with it! – If only after loading the .dll files I could hear the damn things on a reliable basis. But yes, I do like the names: i.e. Delay Lama, B-Assault, AManalogWar, etc – endlessly creative really!
So when I finally got a few to sound after much frustration the musical use was questionable, (for me I mean); unless you are purposely avoiding any musical references. But most of all, there was this “ambience of artificiality about them all” – This is the “so called musical world” we are abandoning our youth to, (I philosophically reflected, as I endlessly clicked and re-clicked the samples with my mouse trying to get them to sound). “This is a world where a real guitar or piano is mostly a “prop” –
Somehow every sound seemed to me the equivalent of “those frozen-processed entrees” Once in a while, a nice touch to a busy life and schedule; eat them regularly and “disease” is sure to get deeply-rooted with time.
OK so I’m not too fond of today’s musical sound palette, but it’s not just that:
The “composing software and the music software” that is the foundation of so much of the rock and pop that even comes out of the big studios today is not something that “miffs me” (believe me, I AM NOT that “old fashioned” I just like old 40’s movies). I understand it only too well; way back in the 1980’s when many of today’s young artists where still their “daddy’s sperm” beginning that long swim up their “mother’s canal”, I spent untold hours hunched over then “modern synthesizers” creating such effects and sounds; BUT by myself, with only the good old tech manual and use of dials, filters, oscillators… and so forth.
Today’s gig>>> You no longer compose music (especially from “your musical soul”) you download and merge the “pre-found” clips and beats included in the package. A “Soulless” and “Joyless” process in my opinion BUT not necessarily an instant, easy one. The “Result”? Everything you create has this “virtual stamp” on it and sounds like every other “voice in the box.” True, you shape it but hardly worth the learning curve to me.
As (the) PINK FLOYD predicted way back in ’74 with their song: “Welcome to the Machine” ) from the album: “Wish You Were Here” the machine is now as a voice and its soul is in the “box” even if you try to musically think “outside the box”…And believe me: I loved MY PINK FLOYD… and English bands in particular. Their foresight is now come to pass (meaning: it is now true in reality what was fantasy in their lyrics)…“Welcome to the Digital Soul”>>>
So from the “soul-less” world of contemporary modern desktop composing, I now fondly bid you adieu… I and “my lonely soul” like a musical Henry Thoreau at some far-away “Walden Pond” on a frontier far from the “modern world” return to my “Digital Piano” that at least has 88 “real-action” keys and perhaps later tonight to “My Old Black & White” (still resting peacefully in my kitchen foyer). I played the theme to my song: My Old Black & White on it the other day, she sounded pretty good considering “she” hasn’t been tuned since my then 86-year-old piano tuner died (I think in 2002).
My old black and white, Greets me with silence, every night.
And whenever I walk through that door;
She’s been my friend now since ‘74
She’s still my old black & white
And though her keys no longer shine so bright,
She’s kept me company (through) many a lonely night.
She’s still my old black & white
I posed for the above picture the day of a concert I played for over 35 people in a log cabin, called “The Music Shed” in Cummington, Mass., A nice open-air mountain town of New England.
I was 30 then and I remember it as passing as briefly as a “summer day” in New England. The last year my body would be unmarred by “the needles of dialysis” and the ensuing struggle of the next twenty years of poverty and struggle to keep myself faithful to my chosen goal and commitment: to learn to play a REAL PIANO. I thought it was just the beginning of long and fruitful career doing this; but I hadn’t seen my latest blood reports….
It was a glorious June Day in the New England mountains and I played a grand piano, very well indeed…

Music: What Makes Austria Tick
Among its many important contributions, music has constituted an important element of Austria’s and, particularly, Vienna’s, cultural life. Vienna has been and continues to be an important center of musical innovation. It is impossible to think about and discuss Austria without giving serious consideration to its long and profound musical presence in the history of Western music.
Vienna’s position as a cultural center took hold in the early 1500s, with focus centered around instruments such as the lute. By the 18th and 19th centuries, composers were drawn to Vienna thanks in large measure to the patronage of the Habsburgs, and made Vienna the European capital of classical music. Vienna’s greatest musical “sons,” such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 – 1791) Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 – 1827), and Johann Strauss II (1825 – 1899), became associated with the city. During the Baroque period, Slavic and Hungarian folk forms influenced Austrian music.
Classical Music
The 18th century, one of the highpoints of classical music, brought Vienna to the forefront of this genre. Three composers in particular created and developed powerful and innovative musical genres: Beethoven and his symphonies, concertantes, chamber music, piano sonatas, operas, and choral music; Mozart, also through similar forms, developed a balance between melody and form; and Franz Joseph Haydn, through the invention of the string quartet and sonata form.
By the latter part of the 18th century, the harpsichord, long the instrument of choice, was replaced by the pianoforte, or simply, the piano. String ensembles and vocal music also grew, while the burgeoning middle-class became more aware of and interested in music through the philosophies of the Enlightenment. In 1842, Otto Nicolai of the Imperial Opera House, announced the creation of what would become the Vienna Philharmonic.
During this period, a division between popular compositions for entertainment and “serious” art music began. At first, the division was less pronounced, with most composers, such as Franz Schubert, and Joseph Strauss, writing in both camps.
But it is with Strauss where a clear departure to popular music takes shape, making Strauss the most celebrated composer of the era, and indeed the first popular Austrian musician. His “Tales of the Vienna Woods” and “Vienna Waltzes” have become staples of the Western musical canon. By the mid- to late 19th century, other composers, such as Gustav Mahler, Anton Bruckner, and Richard Wagner, hailing from either Vienna or closely associated with the city, continue to make Vienna the unrivaled center of Austria’s musical life. Later musical geniuses, particularly Arnold Schönberg, Richard Strauss, Anton von Webern, and Alban Berg, perpetuate Austria’s stronghold on classical music.
Folk music
The flip-side of Austria’s musical record is its long and strong folk music tradition. The ländler, as the name suggests, is the music of the countryside, the land, the peasantry. The ländler, a folk dance in ¾ time, was popular in Austria, as well as in south Germany and German Switzerland at the end of the 18th century. It is a couples’ dance, featured by strong hopping and stamping. At times, it was purely instrumental, and at others had a vocal part, which sometimes included yodeling. With the popularity of dancehalls in 19th century Europe, the ländler adopted a quicker pace and more elegance; men shed the hobnail boots original to the dance and donned more graceful footwear. It is believed that the dance evolved into the waltz.
Yodeling: Mountain music
Maybe it’s the Alps that have something to do with it. In fact it does: Yodeling is a type of throat singing that developed in the famed mountain range. In Austria, it was called juchizn, and featured the use of both non-lexical syllables and yells, which were used to communicate across the mountains. Yodels usually begin with a single voice melody, then joined by several more voices. The presence of an echo is vital for producing a correct sound.

Listen to Music From Hawaii
Copyright (c) 2008 Kentaro Konika
Whether you are a music fan or not, nobody can deny that the music from Hawaii is a beautiful mix of flowing lyrics and rhythms that truly capture the feeling of the islands. Listen to Hawaiian music whether you are into reggae, steel guitar, Jawaiian or slack-key – there is something for everyone!
Anyone who has ever traveled to Hawaii will know that their music is truly mesmerizing. This local scene itself was originally influenced by a number of different sources, including many countries around the beginning of the nineteenth century. Immigrants brought with them a large variety of different musical instruments, with which the Hawaiians soon developed their own distinctive style.
Most famous in Hawaiian music is the ukulele, with a distinctive sound that almost everyone can recognize. Many of the beautiful rhythms are played by this instrument, and the great thing is that they are all inspired by the beauty of the islands and as such really capture their spirit. There is no doubt that the ukulele is uplifting yet melodical when it needs to be.
In Hawaii’s history, it was King David Kalakua who supported a musical resurgence. He inspired many of the locals to create music based on their sense of pride in the islands, and as a result music started to become more and more popular and expressive of local culture.
The sounds of Hawaii, though completely unique, have a number of distinct influences. When you listen to music of the islands you will hear a combination of the styles of jazz, swing, pop, ragtime, gospel and all other kinds of western music. The music is designed for both locals and visitors to either dance to or to simply enjoy the graceful lines and beautiful lyrics. Jawaain music is growing in popularity on the islands as a distinct blend of reggae from Jamaica and more traditional Hawaiian sounds. This is perhaps one of the most popular types of music to dance to on the island, due to the fact that it incorporates many catchy melodies. However, these melodies run a little deeper and are actually written in order to spread the positive spirit of Hawaii and celebrate Hawaiian life.
If you want to listen to music of Hawaii then you can either get your hands on some records, or visit the islands for an authentic musical experience. If you tune your radio in Hawaii you will find that there are many local stations dedicated to playing strictly Hawaiian music. You may also be able to catch a live performance. There are several music festivals held in Hawaii every year, including the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival, the Molokai Music Festival and Oahu’s Steel Guitar Association. When you come to stay in Hawaii this is definitely an experience not to be missed. You could even look for some hotels that put on live music performances for their guests. Whatever you do, find some way to experience this unique culture and listen to the music of the island!

Violin Music in Demand for Los Angeles Weddings – Population is Very Sophisticated When it Comes to Ceremony and Reception Music
We all know that the sky is the limit when it comes to entertainment opportunities in Los Angeles. The high demand for musical events and the abundant supply of musicians and bands make LA one of the best places where to look for great wedding music in Los Angeles. Due to its close proximity to Hollywood, LA is one of the best targets for musicians from all over the world. Consequently, this city’s great diversity makes it almost impossible not to find something that will perfectly fit into your event. When it comes to weddings, people tend to preserve the traditions within their culture, which implies a certain style of music for a certain event. Also, each culture follows a certain ritual when it comes to weddings, so a good place to start your journey in finding the perfect band for your wedding is to establish what parts your wedding is made of and where would you need a band. Regardless of the ethnicity, the culture, or the age group of the people that attend your wedding, the artists that serve this great metropolis will provide you with the perfect wedding music.
Los Angeles wedding band members are usually very knowledgeable about the characteristics of the market they serve and adjust their repertoire based on the particularities of each and every wedding. There is no such thing as two identical weddings and the Los Angeles wedding bands know it very well. They will work with event planners, wedding coordinators, brides and grooms, and everyone else involved in the planning process to make sure that the celebration will be an absolute success, to the smallest detail. Everyone knows that the music is the salt and pepper of a wedding and everyone gets a little bit nervous when the time comes to take care of that task on the list. The countless challenges that a wedding band Los Angeles based has to face in order to survive in this highly competitive market force the musicians to permanently adjust their practice in order to meet the needs of such demanding clientele. With an extensive experience in the musical world, a professional Los Angeles wedding band will easily tailor its performance to match the atmosphere of any kind of ceremony or reception, even if more than one type of music is required for the same event.
The large exposure to the musical arena that the residents of LA have, has altered these people’s tastes and made them more sophisticated and demanding when it comes to ceremony and reception music in Los Angeles. The abundant offer and competition in this particular market gave them power but, at the same time, made them more vulnerable. The variety of styles and the multitude of choices are immense and choosing a Los Angeles wedding band can become an overwhelming experience. The idea of having many choices available at your finger tip is quite a tempting scenario, but making the actual decision may prove not to be as fun as it seemed to be at the beginning. You may even end up completely disoriented and realizing that you don’t know what music you actually want.
This is possible because the extended practice and experience of professional wedding musicians gives them the ability to play almost any kind of music style one can imagine. Famous wedding violin players usually do not limit their experience to only violin music for weddings; they play violin in any band and for any occasion, this making them familiar with various music styles. Over time they also develop an extra sense for perceiving the audience’s dynamics and adjusting their performance accordingly, which will prove very useful in moments when the music is the only one that could save something that wanted to be an extraordinary event but it is about to turn into something boring. We all know that most of the times, the music is the one that makes an event and wedding musicians are very well aware of this.
I have recently attended a wedding where the music was provided by a string quartet and a small band. The string quartet was made of two violins, one cello, and one double base. I know; when people think of a violin, they usually picture a concert hall where unless you are into the classical music, you will soon fall asleep. This was not the case here. This string quartet put together a beautiful repertoire for this wedding, and created a very romantic atmosphere with their beautiful, timeless music for the wedding ceremony, including prelude, processional, candle lighting, readings and recessional. Then, they added drums to this string quartet, and seamlessly and smoothly created a transition from the ceremony into the reception, performing swing, jazz, tango, Latin, and Celtic music. They included all pop classics or everyone’s favorite movie themes! It was unbelievable! I have learned that the violin is a magic instrument! All my life I limited the life of the violin to the classical world, but this wedding opened my eyes. A violin can be used for elegant solo violin music for wedding ceremonies; jazz, swing, tango, latin, and bossa novas for cocktail hours and dinner parties; as well as fiddle music, funk, rock, blues, latin, ska, celtic, and dance music for receptions, holiday parties, and corporate events.
The wedding musicians from a violin ensemble can usually feature solo, duo, and trio combinations, according to your event’s needs. Even if you require different types of music for more than one event in the same celebration, famous violin players for weddings usually play the violin in any band and are able to tailor their musical performance to fit the mood, the atmosphere, and the nature of the ceremony you have. If you want a classical touch to your wedding ceremony you will be using a solo violinist for weddings. This way, the actual ceremony will be just the beginning of a charming evening that the guests won’t soon forget. Following the ceremony, the violin ensemble can transform itself into a violin string quartet for receptions, bringing a touch of class to your after party. Then, with some drums and other exotic instruments such as a mandolin, or a flute, or an electric guitar, the band will invite you to an unforgetable night of joy, dance, and good disposition.

How to Use Music to Help Improve the Health of Older People
Long before we were aware of the scientific and technical attributes of ‘music’ the effects of various forms of music have been known and utilised from early in mans history.
From the well documented use of Military Music to inspire or create fear in major battles and skirmishes throughout our troubled past, to the much more pleasing accounts of Greek physicians arranging to take their patients out of Hospital to attend musical concerts in the local amphitheatre in the knowledge that music would aid recovery.
Centuries before that we have the Biblical reference to David (later to be King David) attempting, (in this instance, unsuccessfully!) to soothe the then King Saul with his Harp playing. Down through the ages instrumental and vocal refrains have permeated and in some instances, dominated forms of religious devotions, from the tribal drum through to the Oriental Gong and Bell and Gregorian Chants to the massed Cathedral Choirs that characterise many State, Religious, or Public occasions.
In comparatively recent times there is a growing field of study into just what effects music has on the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of the human race. Some of this is driven by the fact that Music in all its forms is available by some means or other to a great percentage of the population continuously, indoors or out, whether static or on the move. We have progressed (?) from the family singalong to the first home Radios and the Stereogram!). Surround or Theatre Sound, Portable Radios, Cassette Players, C D’s, Walkman Personal Players, Mini Discs, MP3, iPod, Mobile phones with integrated players – in fact progress is so fast in this field that it is hard to keep abreast of the improvements and minituarising of the systems available. But the question remains, just what impact does this continual bombardment of ‘noise’ have on us?
Apart from the ways music has been used in the past, today we see a trend towards recognition of the benefits that sypathetic use of music has in a therapeutic way. Allow me to illustrate in one particular area, i.e. the elderly and those affected by forms of ageing or dementia.
Some fifteen years ago a well respected musical arranger and professional pianist almost unwittingly embarked on a mission to apply his talents and musical knowledge to brightening the life of a very poorly relative who found it difficult to respond to the usual sympathetic visits. No matter how cheerful the visitor, or encouraging the conversation, the only times that a marked improvement was seen in the ‘patient’s well being or attitude was when music was introduced to the visits.
Recognising even back then the potential of using music specifically as a tool (or more appropriately, if you’ll pardon the pun, an instrument) to improve the spirit of a person, the intrepid musician started to investigate the concept in two ways. One, to discover for himself if there were elements of music which literally had an effect on the mind, brain or senses and could be utilised to bring health benefits to people, particularly those with problems associated with stages of dementia, learning difficulties and other conditions which obstructed efforts to raise their spirits. Secondly, if that theory were correct, whether it could be developed to the extent that ordinary people without profound musical or medical knowledge could act as ‘therapists’ in the broad sense and bring some brightness into the lives of those affected.
Accepting that although he was well qualified as a musician, he did not aspire to any great Medical, or Psychological letters after his name, he pursued a more practical approach by exploring how popular and readily obtainable music might be harnessed to help those same people.
He also pursued studying the results of the academic research into the Brain Wave ranges and their effects on the individual. The music he utilised was carefully chosen, re-recorded and balanced to provide the ultimate benefit from relatively short, attention holding pieces, assembled into hour long sessions. This was found, when linked to simple rhythmic movements to act as both a mental and physical stimulus.
Utilising a group of willing (and grateful) local Care Homes, contemporary music styles were introduced by the researcher and his wife, who added her knowledge of movement and choreography to encourage clients as a group to exercise, vocalise, reminisce, and relax in turn. Individuals were advised to participate purely within their capabilities and not to overstretch their comfort zone.
The results were very marked, as attested to by residents and Care Managers alike. Over a fairly short period of time, improvement was noticed. With spirits raised and circulation improved, social bonding increased as did appetites!
Music, what a wonderful aid to health and well being, plus you don’t need a prescription – and cost can be minimal or zero!
